Under American rules the move simply stops the moment you crown, so a jump that would have continued is thrown away — and the difference decides games, because the same move is either one capture or four.

Where more than one capture is open to you, take the one that removes the most pieces; if two are equal, choose freely. American checkers already forces you to capture when you can, but it lets you pick WHICH capture, so a player can deliberately take the small jump to avoid opening a line. Requiring the maximum removes that dodge and is how international draughts has always handled it.
