Free first research
The initial research phase is free rather than costing three megacredits per card. A common opening variant that reduces early-game starvation.

More Terraforming Mars houserules
- Generation limit
Agree a hard cap of fourteen generations before starting; the game ends there even if Mars is not fully terraformed, scoring as normal. Keeps a long game to a predictable length.
- Draft the opening corporations
Deal each player three corporations instead of two and draft them in turn order. Reduces the swing of a corporation that does not match the board.
