Deal eight bird cards instead of five during setup. Each player still chooses how many to keep, discarding one food for every bird kept as usual, and the rest go back to the bottom of the deck. An opening hand with nothing you can afford is the least interesting way to lose.

Any player taking the gain-food action may reroll the birdfeeder once per round, not only when every visible die shows the same face. Food droughts in Wingspan tend to decide a round before anyone has made a decision.
During setup each player may discard both bonus cards once and draw two fresh ones, keeping one as usual. Bonus cards vary wildly in achievability.
