If a drawn tile cannot be placed anywhere, the player may draw one replacement before discarding it. Prevents a wasted turn through no fault of the player.

Always begin with the river expansion tiles, and no two river tiles may curve the same direction twice in a row. Produces a more open board and fewer dead ends.
Play without farmers entirely: meeples may only be placed on roads, cities and cloisters. The most common way to teach the game — end-game scoring stops being a lecture.
