Three food each, and a first round that snakes back
Give every player 3 food at setup instead of 2 for the starting player and 3 for the rest. Then, in the first round only, each player's second worker is placed in reverse turn order, so the last player places twice in succession before the turn comes back around. The printed compensation for going late is a single extra food, which does not buy back the opening action somebody else took first. Credited in Lookout's appendix to David Larkin.
